Is it smoke damage?

Signs Smoke Damage Is Still in Your Home

Smoke reaches far beyond the burned area. If you notice any of these, residue is still somewhere in the house.

  • A Smell That Won’t Go Away

Smoke odor that lingers for days or weeks, or gets stronger on humid days.

  • Gray or Yellow Film

A dull film on walls, ceilings, windows and cabinets that smears when you wipe it.

  • Soot Webs and Dark Corners

Black, stringy soot in ceiling corners and dark shadows around outlets and vents.

  • Odor From the Vents

The smell gets worse when the heat or air conditioning turns on.

  • Belongings That Smell of Smoke

Furniture, carpet, clothing and bedding that still smell like the fire.

  • Smoke From Somewhere Else

A neighbor’s fire or wildfire smoke drifting through Southeast Washington can leave odor and residue too.

Soot removal

Soot Removed at the Source, Not Painted Over

Soot can cover almost any surface, and smoke reaches far beyond the burned area, into air vents and the attic. Painting over it or wiping it down traps the residue and the smell. We remove it.

  • Dry Ice Blasting

Removes soot, smoke residue and contaminants from wood, metal and concrete, including inside wall framing, without water or harsh chemicals.

  • HEPA Air Filtration

Air scrubbers run while we work to capture fine soot particles before they settle somewhere else.

  • Surface-by-Surface Cleaning

Walls, ceilings, cabinets and fixtures are cleaned of smoke film and soot, not just wiped down or painted over.

How We Remove Smoke Odor

Odor removal isn’t one machine. We use the methods that fit your home, in the right order.

  • Source Removal

Soot and smoke residue are cleaned off, and charred materials that can’t be cleaned are removed.

  • Dry Ice Blasting

Strips soot and smoke residue from framing and hard surfaces, and removes odor from fire damage.

  • HEPA Air Filtration

Air scrubbers pull fine soot particles out of the air while the work is underway.

  • Hydroxyl Generation

Breaks down smoke odor in the air and on surfaces. Hydroxyl generators can run while the space is occupied.

  • Ozone Application

Breaks down stubborn odor molecules. Rooms must be empty of people, pets and plants during treatment.

  • Encapsulant Application

A sealer on cleaned framing and surfaces locks in any trace odor before walls are closed up.

Beyond the walls

Your Air System and Your Belongings

Smoke odor hides in the places people don’t think to clean. These two are the most common.

HVAC and Duct Cleaning

Smoke travels into air vents and ductwork. If soot is left in the system, the smell comes back every time the heat or air conditioning turns on. We clean the ductwork so the system stops recirculating smoke odor through the house.

  • Smell gets stronger when the system runs
  • Gray or black streaks around vent covers

Contents Cleaning

Furniture, keepsakes and everyday belongings hold smoke odor too. We move damaged contents to a safe area and clean them as part of the restoration, so your belongings are cared for along with the structure.

  • Furniture and soft goods that smell of smoke
  • Belongings with soot film or residue
The question everyone asks

Will the Smell Come Back?

Smoke odor comes back when residue is left behind: soot inside wall cavities, in the attic, in ductwork, or soaked into porous materials. Sprays and fogging only cover it for a while, so the smell returns on humid days or when the heat comes on.

That’s why we deal with the source first, then the air, then seal what’s left.

  1. Find and Remove the Source

Soot and smoke residue are cleaned off, and materials that can’t be cleaned are removed, so they stop releasing odor.

  2. Treat the Air and Surfaces

Hydroxyl generation or ozone breaks down the odor that’s left in the air and on surfaces.

  3. Seal What Stays

An encapsulant is applied to cleaned surfaces like framing, locking in any trace odor before repairs close things up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Smoke Smell Come Back?

Smoke odor returns when residue is left behind in wall cavities, the attic, ductwork or porous materials. That’s why we remove the source first, then treat the air and surfaces, then seal what stays.

Can I Clean Soot Myself?

Wiping soot with a wet cloth or household cleaner usually smears it deeper into paint, grout and fabric. For more than a small patch, have it assessed first. Call (509) 525-2121 and we’ll tell you what you’re dealing with.

Can We Stay in the House While You Work?

It depends on the method. Hydroxyl generators can run while a space is occupied; ozone treatment needs rooms empty of people, pets and plants. We’ll explain the plan before we start.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Smoke Damage?

Most homeowners policies cover fire and smoke damage, though coverage limits and deductibles depend on the policy, and your insurance company makes the coverage decision. We walk you through the process and help with the paperwork.

The Fire Wasn’t in My House. Can Smoke Still Cause Damage?

Yes. Smoke from a neighbor’s fire or wildfire smoke drifting through Southeast Washington can leave odor and residue inside a home. If you can smell it or see it, it’s worth an assessment.

How Long Does Smoke Cleanup Take?

It depends on how far the smoke traveled and what it reached. After the assessment we’ll walk you through the scope and the timeline.
